In a historic development for India and a proud moment for Surat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated the world’s highest railway arch bridge, the Chenab Bridge, in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district. Surat’s Steel Powers a National Milestone
Both the Chenab Bridge and the newly inaugurated Anji Bridge, India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge, have been constructed using high-quality fabricated steel supplied by AMNS India’s Hazira plant in Surat. Out of the 32,000 tons of steel used, an impressive 25,000 tons went into building the Chenab Bridge alone, constituting over 70% of the total steel used.
This fabricated steel was engineered to endure the tough Himalayan terrain, showcasing Surat’s ability to support world-class infrastructure.

- Length: 1,315 meters

This engineering wonder connects remote Himalayan regions and significantly boosts connectivity in Jammu & Kashmir, marking a major milestone in Indian Railways’ history.
Steel From Surat’s Hazira Plant: Special Features
The fabricated steel supplied from the Hazira plant is engineered with the following world-class features:
- Withstands extreme temperatures: from +45°C to -20°C
- Designed for earthquake and blast resistance
- Coated with anti-rust treatment
- High structural stress and thermal tolerance
- 120-year durability, ideal for harsh mountain environments
Logistics to move such heavy and complex steel structures from Gujarat to the mountains of Kashmir required a robust supply chain. Another feat worth celebrating.
Anji Bridge: India’s First Cable-Stayed Rail Bridge
Also unveiled by PM Modi, the Anji Bridge is India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge. Built at a height of 331 meters, it uses 96 cables anchored on a Y-shaped pillar.
A total of 7,000 tons of custom-fabricated steel, again from Surat’s Hazira facility, went into the bridge. Unlike raw steel, fabricated steel is cut, molded, and shaped to the exact specifications needed for the structure, ensuring precision and safety.
