ABVP Protests 20% VNSGU Fees Hike for Self-Financed Courses

ABVP protest

A sudden 20% fee hike in self-finance courses at Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU) has sparked widespread outrage among students in Surat. The revised fee structure will be applicable from the upcoming 2025–26 academic year, affecting both undergraduate and postgraduate programs offered under self-financed models at VNSGU and its affiliated colleges.

Student Discontent Over VNSGU Fees Hike

Students have expressed strong dissatisfaction, branding the decision as arbitrary and unjustified. Many are worried about the financial burden it will place on middle-class and economically weaker families. Several students shared concerns that the sudden increase could discourage higher education for those already struggling to meet existing costs.

Speaking to SuratUpdates, a postgraduate student from the Department of Management said, “We already pay a substantial amount for self-financed courses. This unexpected 20% hike is shocking and unfair.”

ABVP Stands Against the Hike

In response to the growing unrest, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has declared that it will stage protests across Surat and on the VNSGU campus. The student organization has demanded that the university administration roll back the fee hike and engage in dialogue with student representatives.

An ABVP spokesperson stated, “This fee hike is a blow to students who are already under pressure due to rising education costs. We will not remain silent. Protests will be organized until the university reconsiders its decision.”

University Yet to Respond

As of now, the VNSGU administration has not issued any formal clarification or statement regarding the rationale behind the hike. Sources suggest the increase may be due to rising operational costs and a lack of government subsidies for self-financed programs.

The VNSGU fee hike has not only stirred anger but also brought attention to the broader issue of affordability in higher education. With ABVP stepping in and students preparing for demonstrations, this issue is likely to remain at the forefront of Surat’s academic and political discourse in the coming weeks.
